Sai Pallavi has rarely put a foot wrong. She is widely seen as one of the finest performers in Indian cinema, often dominating her films and earning the highest praise, even next to big heroes. But for the first time in her career, her presence and performance are facing criticism, and it has come with her biggest role yet: Sita in Ramayana.
A Career Built on Performances
Whatever role Sai Pallavi picks, audiences usually feel no one else could have played it better. From her debut in Premam to films like Fidaa, Love Story, Gargi and Amaran, she has built a reputation for natural, powerful performances.
That’s why the current reaction has surprised so many.
Doubts Before Release
The criticism actually started before Ramayana was released. When the film’s promotional content came out, some viewers felt Sai Pallavi looked artificial as Sita, and that the divine grace associated with the character wasn’t coming through.
At the time, many expected the film itself would answer those doubts.
Criticism Grows After Release
Instead, the criticism has grown since the film hit theatres. A section of reviews and audiences have said Sai Pallavi doesn’t suit the role, with some calling her a miscast. In several reviews, her presence and performance have even been listed among the film’s negative points.
For an actress known for getting the highest marks in almost every film, that is a big shock.
Yash and Ranbir Win Praise
The contrast with her co-stars has made the criticism stand out even more. Yash has been widely praised as Ravana, with many calling him a perfect fit for the larger-than-life role. Ranbir Kapoor has also won appreciation as Lord Rama, with audiences feeling he did justice to the character.
Not Everyone Agrees
The response isn’t one-sided. Some reviews have praised her. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, in the film’s first review from India, wrote that she “brings dignity and strength to her role”, and that her naturalistic performance adds warmth to the emotional moments.
Her fans also point out that Sita is a quieter, more restrained role, which may not give her as much room to shine as her usual characters.
A Rare Setback
Still, the criticism marks a rare moment in Sai Pallavi’s career. For an actress who has almost always been the highlight of her films, Ramayana has become the first time audiences have openly questioned her casting.
With Ramayana Part 2 set for Diwali 2028, all eyes will be on how her portrayal of Sita develops in the next chapter.
